Issue Positions

For Presidential and Congressional candidates who refuse to provide voters with their positions, Vote Smart has researched their public records to determine their likely responses. These issue positions are from 2014.

  • "I am pro-life. As the father of five young children, I see first-hand every day how precious life truly is. I do believe, as most Americans do, that there is an exception for rape, incest and the life of the mother." (votesmart.org)
  • "*a rational federal fiscal policy that spends and taxes less. *the end of burdensome regulations that prevent companies from hiring.*a reform of the tax code and a reduction in marginal rates to spur private investment." (votesmart.org)
  • "The best way to grow our economy and create new jobs is to reform the tax code, eliminate corporate loopholes, and improve our business climate by eliminating unnecessary regulations. As a member of Congress, I would immediately do two things:*Work to permanently repeal the Death Tax.*Reduce marginal rates to spur economic growth." (votesmart.org)
  • "Government spending continues to surge and the national deficit now stands at nearly $18 trillion. Fueled by deficit spending, high taxes and an over-reliance on borrowing, the bloat of government is bigger than ever.Just as households do, the federal government should be required to live within its means. As a businessman for more than 35 years, I know that no organization can spend more than it takes in and survive -- unless like the government, it can run a $18 trillion deficit!" (votesmart.org)
  • "Education starts at home and parental involvement is the most important factor in any child's development. My wife and I taught our children to read -- we didn't wait for the government -- because we knew that kids who are read to by their parents achieve academic readiness faster.Parents, along with local teachers, principals and local school districts are responsible for the education of our children and decisions about educating them are best made at the local level. We all know the difference that parents and caring teachers make in the lives and educations of our children -- we need to support their ability to shape their own communities by keeping our education tax dollars invested right here in Connecticut, not in the federal bureaucracy. We should have choices for parents and students -- between public schools, charter schools, private schools and home schooling. For too long, we have failed generations of public school students by denying educational programs that work.My plan for the federal role in education is simple -- provide funding for local school districts to make local decisions that affect local students." (votesmart.org)
  • "One immediate step that should be taken is the approval of the fourth phase of the Keystone pipeline which would create thousands of jobs and deliver 700,000 barrels of oil per day." (votesmart.org)
  • "I am committed to the dependable, affordable, and environmentally clean production of energy for America's future. I am committed to an energy policy that enhances our economic and national security -- and one that includes development of all sources of energy -- renewable energy, nuclear, natural gas, clean coal and domestic oil production, as well as any other forms of energy that can become economically viable and affordable to consumers." (votesmart.org)
  • "The best way to grow our economy and create new jobs is to reform the tax code, eliminate corporate loopholes, and improve our business climate by eliminating unnecessary regulations." (votesmart.org)
  • "Gun ownership is a right and with rights come responsibility. I believe we should promote gun safety education and training programs to ensure that guns are used safely and are used by those with proper training and licensing." (votesmart.org)
  • "ObamaCare -- with its mandates, regulations and costs -- is a threat to the economic stability of our country." (votesmart.org)
  • There are many problems with ObamaCare, but the main one is that it does not work. It needs to be repealed and replaced with solutions that actually do work. (votesmart.org)
  • "Border security is not only a matter of national defense, but also a matter of economic defense. Quite simply, it is both a public safety issue and a jobs issue. We must penalize businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Existing technologies can determine whether a candidate for a job in an American business is in our country legally. When a business hires illegal immigrants, it gains an unfair competitive advantage over a business that complies with the law." (votesmart.org)
  • Despite exhaustive research, Vote Smart was unable to find information about this candidate's position.
  • "America must be strong and vigilant and we need national defense policies at home and overseas that keep America safe and free.Unfortunately, the President's budget priorities have placed ObamaCare above defense spending and the President's 2013 budget reduced national defense to the lowest of the major budget priorities of the federal government in terms of dollars allocated. In addition, our military's personnel levels and force structure have also been reduced.History has taught us that standing up to bullies early can save American lives later on. President Reagan stood up to the Soviets until the people of the Soviet Union themselves demanded Western freedoms -- and President Reagan lived to see the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.Being the greatest nation in the world brings great responsibility. Throughout history, America's values and principles have been beacons of freedom to the world. We need to ensure a military that is capable of safeguarding our national security, preventing a major power threat to our allies around the globe and protecting Americans against threats to their lives and well-being." (votesmart.org)
  • "First and foremost, we need to honor our commitment to people who have worked their entire life paying into the Social Security system, period. We need to provide all current social security recipients with the peace of mind that there will be NO change in their current benefits, period. With that said, we need to have an honest discussion and a bipartisan solution to fixing the system that everyone agrees is going bankrupt with the only question being when. These are the hard issues members of Congress are supposed to be fixing for our children and the future of our country, rather then playing politics with them as they kick the can down the road election after election. I am prepared to work with democrats and republicans on real fixes and I am more concerned with future generations instead of future elections." (votesmart.org)
  • "Our Social Security system is broken. We must provide our citizens with more choices and more retirement options. It is unfair to mandate participation in a federal system that is headed for bankruptcy. It is unfair to require participation in a system that may not be able to pay the promised benefits. There is no "security" in social security if you do not get the money. We also need to honor our commitment to those near retirement age who for years have been paying into -- and relying upon -- the current system. And we need to provide all current social security recipients with the peace of mind that there will be NO change in their current benefits.I believe we need to overhaul the system and I propose the following voluntary options:1. If an individual stays with public/federal social security, the retirement age should be gradually increased for new enrollees to age 70. The average life expectancy is far higher now than when Social Security was enacted and raising the age is a way to maintain the integrity of the fund.2. Allow individuals the voluntary choice to participate in a private retirement plan, such as a 401k, a Keogh pension plan or a Roth IRA.3. Allow individuals to convert the money they have paid into the federal system to a private plan.Allowing individuals to select from many different kinds of tax deferred pension plans will provide maximum choice and competition -- and it will allow people to individually plan their retirement in the way that makes the most sense for them and their families."
